Year after year, Central Connecticut State University students turn to Elmer's Place in New Britain for inexpensive beer, tasty eats, and loud nighttime fun .
The Vibe Inside: Don't be fooled by Elmer's coziness. The place manages to pack in a lot of people. Once inside, patrons take one of three directions. To the left is the bar; to the right is a pizza parlor-style restaurant; and straight ahead is the main area where everyone hangs out. Aside from the neon beer signs plastered over the windows, the bar area is clad with wooden booths and televisions in each corner. Pool tables disappear and reappear from the open area depending on the theme night
Elmer's old-fashioned, friendly tavern atmosphere doesn't come easy. Ken Cook bought the property in 1981, evolving it from a former strip club nto a standard college bar and restaurant. Cook says it's not just the beer and food that gets the college students flocking here. "You have to make it fun," Cook said. "We do a lot of promoting and parties. It's a lot of hard work."
The Crowd: Mostly college coeds from CCSU. "I come here all the time with my friends after a long week of classes and enjoy the friendly atmosphere with everyone," said Phil Sember, a 21-year-old CCSU senior. "Some of my favorite nights have taken place here."
What to Wear: Extremely casual. While some patrons may choose to dress to impress, most are college students simply out to have some fun.
The Music: Everything from Classic Rock to Top 40 Dance. It can get a little loud during the evening hours so get your vocal chords ready to yell. On Thursday nights, DJ Vin caters to patrons' musical needs. On Friday, karaoke begins at 9 p.m.
Drinks: Beer ranges from $5 Domestic pitchers on Sundays to $8 on weekdays. Bud, Bud Light, and Michelob Light $1 specials happen on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The weekend starts Thursday night for many college students, so at Elmer's Thursday is Big Ass Draft Night from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with 23 oz. Miller and Coors Lite mug refills for $1. From 10:30 p.m. until 1 a.m., enjoy 23 oz. Miller and Coors Lite mug refills for $3, with Jager and Goldschlager shots for $2. On Fridays, import bottles are $2.50 and mixed well or call drinks are $2.50 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Eats: Get your late night orders in before 12:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 1:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and you won't be disappointed.
Bottom Line: Good friends, good company, and good parties.
