Michelada

What’s in it: Beer, chili powder, hot sauce and lime juice.

As an individual with a palate for spicy food, I’ve long thought the concept of a Bloody Mary brilliant—except for one tiny issue: I don’t like tomatoes. Yet, tempted by the spices in the drink, I’ve ordered it many times only to cringe after each and every sip of the tomatoey mixture.
Thankfully, my quest for a palatable substitute ended at El Sarape with the Michelada, a Mexican beer cocktail made with lime juice, hot sauce and varying spices. Some recipes call for tomato juice—though, luckily, not this one.
At El Sarape, Micheladas are made with your choice of beer (I picked Corona) mixed with lime, chili powder and hot sauce. They are served over ice in a beer mug with a salted rim.
The cocktail was salty, sour and simultaneously cool and spicy. The ingredients made it red and less carbonated. It was refreshing and delicious—everything I'd always imagined a Bloody Mary would be.
