Millions of fans will be giddy from start to finish. With bated breath, they’ll watch the hard fought drives, the dangerous, gutsy passes and vicious collisions between the brave competitors. Not until the final moment will a winner emerge from the grizzled field of the defeated.
No, it’s not a replay of the Giants’ win in Super Bowl XXII on ESPN Classic. It’s NASCAR. The 2008 season began Feb. 17 with the 50th running of the Daytona 500.
NASCAR, and auto racing in general, is misconceived as a “Southern sport.” Nutmeggers in their sweater sets and Brooks Brothers’ suits tend to dismiss the sport without giving it much thought while they rush off to jobs in the insurance capital of the world. But real NASCAR fans know if they'd just let their hair loose, they'd have a good time. No pick-up truck or mullet required. Domestic beer a must.
