New Britain Rock Cats
New Britain Stadium
Even online encyclopedia wikipedia.org can't exactly define what a “rock cat” is. It may refer to some geologically dwelling feline or, perhaps, a kitty that really digs blues-based rhythms. And of course this raises the question, how would such a creature relate to New Britain, a city known for its hardware industry and substantial population of Polish immigrants?
It doesn’t matter, because the etymology is immaterial. If nothing else, the New Britain Rock Cats, a double-A Eastern League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, just sounds cool. Besides, “Rocky” is just one of eight mascots (including a walrus named “Blooper” and “Advanced Copy Toner the Copy Cat”) that meander through the stadium, boosting home team pride.
