The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band, celebrating their 40th anniversary, rolled through Hartford August 30 with Widespread Panic. Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes sat in on the Widespread Panic show, delighting the crowd with Surprise Valley and an extended guitar jam fueled by the masterful guitar combination of Jimmi Herring, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks’ slide. By the time the sun went down, the crowd was ready for the more than two-hour set of music from the Allman Brothers, celebrating their heritage with images of the former brothers, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley projected behind them. The band played many favorites but also covered current powerhouse songs like “Soulshine” from Warren Haynes. A cover of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic” gave fans a slow moment to relax. Guest players to the show included Jimmi Herring and Scott Murawski of Max Creek. The show was tied up with Gregg Allman taking a break from the keyboards, picking up his acoustic and singing a beautiful version of “Melissa” with only Butch, Warren, and Oteil backing him up. The final encore sent the fans home with a powerful version of Statesboro Blues.
