The James Gallery was built in 1790 as a general store. Revolutionary hero Marquis de Lafayette allegedly shopped for either socks or a bar of saddle soap there in 1824; nobody's sure which. The soda fountain—the same one in use today—was installed in 1896. It's one of only a handful of operating, original soda fountains in the state. James features a stable of about 20 ice cream flavors, plus some sherbets and frozen yogurts. The ice cream is supplied by Buck's La Favorita Ice Cream Co. out of Milford. The special treat at any soda fountain, of course, is the soda. James'll mix up cola, root beer, orange, vanilla, cherry or lemon for $1.50. Plus—and this is a must—it also serves old-fashioned, authentic egg creams, made with chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer.
