Cafe Allegre is a popular, pretty Italian restaurant on the Boston Post Road in the heart of downtown Madison. On nights when family or work schedules don't mesh with a sit-down meal in a restaurant, the cafe's fans have another outlet: the recently opened Allegre Gourmet Express is the take-out version of Cafe Allegre. The Express shop can be a little tricky to find, as it's behind a row of buildings that face the Boston Post Road and hide an access road to the Stop & Shop shopping center. Express choices are strictly heat and eat. Most of the appetizers, soups, sauces and entrees are refrigerated, although some are available frozen. The specialty pastas - ravioli, cavatelli, gnocchi and manicotti - become quick meals when paired with one of Allegre's sauces. The chicken parmigiana, chicken piccata, and sole florintina are all first rate. And for those who want a sweet ending to their meal, tiramisu, sorbetto or fresh gelato should more than satisfy.
