First look: Sisson Tavern

If the new Sisson Tavern had its own entry in the dictionary, the definition would read "biggest, tastiest bang for your buck"—and that is exactly what the new Hartford bar and restaurant aims to be. Located across Sisson Avenue from Wood-n-Tap, the tavern's Web site proclaims: "Affordable Drinks - Priceless Fun & Tasty Eats"—and, boy, does this joint succeed! Indeed, the mantra of affordable yet tasty food is part of what makes Sisson Tavern so special; it's a nice spot serving good food during a recession, when most diners are likely pinching their pennies.

The tavern's historical significance to the city also is worth noting. In 1934, Sisson Tavern first opened its doors in the spot now occupied by Wood-n-Tap. It was one of the first 10 establishments to receive a liquor permit after prohibition. In 1972, the owner of Sisson Tavern took the pizza oven and bar and moved it across the street to the two-level building it currently occupies. In the '90s, a firemen's social club called the restaurant home and, in April, Stephen "Goldie" Goldstein and Alexander Depratti, two University of Hartford grads who met in college, bought the space. The grand re-opening took place in mid-December.
