Pleasantly tired, hungry and sunburned after a day at the beach, you spot a hand-painted sign driving home on Route 1. Boldly it advertises: The Place. Just past the sign, you see clusters of happy people sitting atop tree stumps around big, red tables. Smoke wafts over from a giant, fiery barbeque. The air is festive, redolent with smells of cooking shellfish. It's a hootenanny of a cookout, a nightly cookout to which you are invited. Enjoy seafood, steak, chicken, corn, soda and desserts. Extend a fine summer day with a roasted lobster and an ear of fire-grilled corn. It's a BYOB affair: most bring bottles of wine. Some customers lay tablecloths over the tables and use pillows to soften the stump-seat. The very loyal may even earn the prestige of their very own personalized stumps.
